marble.com product videos

Project Overview

marble.com SEO team has requested cinematic video clip for each countertop color featured on marble.com website. The website stone gallery has currently over 800 materials. Granite, quartz, marble and others. To fulfill this request me and my team had to come with an idea on how to deliver this amount of video clips that would feature one stone color in few lifestyle settings.  The project is in progress.

Project Objectives

This task involved producing and filming over 800 1 minute videos. Each clip would feature a voice over, various lifestyle clips for one countertop material.

Other Considerations

Classic video production was out of the question. Finding real-life houses and locations with specific stone color installed and hiring a film crew to shoot and edit it was impossible.

The only viable way to deliver this project was to again use 3D Art. The challenge here was that even using 3D tech was very expensive due to the fact that rendering 3D animations is very time and resource consuming. Animating 3D movies was also ruled out.

Final Strategy

After some research I designed an unique way of executing this project.  I used some techniques from movie industry animations and my own ideas to develop a workflow that would allow to produce this quantity of high quality video clips within affordable budget. Instead of animating a 60 FPS clips (which was not economically feasible) I used a mix of single static renders, sets of static renders and actual 60fps 3D animations.  The amount 3D renderings needed to create 1 movie decreased from 3600 jpg static frames in 60fps 1 minute format to a little over 250. Creative video editing was used to add effects of panning, particle movement and camera wobble.

Project Details

Example 1 minute movie components:

  1. Movie Script for voice actor voice over.
  2. B-Roll 3D components to match the script and the voice over.
  3. Creative video editing.

Workflow:

PHASE 1

  1. Creation of 50 unique 3D templates for static renders, static render sets and mp4 animations. Each template would include a 3D Scene with multiple color finishes on floors, countertops etc.

PHASE 2

  1. Creation of 10 to 12 final 3D assets for each of 800+ movies.

3D ASSET Types

R – Static Renders

ARDOF – Set of 3 static renders to mimic “focus pull effect” using DOF switch.

ARCOL – Set of 3 static renders to mimic color change. ( Example: In order to b-roll visualize sentence “Astoria granite goes perfectly with maple … cherry … and oak cabinets” ARCOL would cosist of 3 renderings of the same camera view but with 3 different respective floor finishes)

ARLIG – Set of 3 static renders to mimic effect of light change – for example night and day or lights on and off.

ANIME – 60fps 3D animation
